Khreshchatyk is the main street of Kiev. Since the NINETEENTH century is still the most popular place that people liked to walk the townspeople. The name of the street was due to Groin Yar, where the street began. But before the eighteenth century there was the usual wasteland, however, advantageous location between several districts did their job – Khreschatyk quickly became a Central city street. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the old building was destroyed during the Second world war, so today, Khreshchatyk is built mainly with buildings, in the so-called “Stalinist style”. However, some old buildings are still preserved, the oldest hotel is "Cana" 1874 built (it is now the Central grocery store).
Today, the street stretches from the European square, on which stands the building of the Ukrainian house. Can not attract the attention and the tower, located above the House of trade unions, which is operated electronic watch. The street stretches to the area of Bessarabia, where the famous and the oldest in Kiev Besarabsky market, built in 1910-1912. The Khreschatyk crosses the famous Independence Square (in the vernacular simply referred to as Maidan).
Throughout downtown (and it's 1, 2 km) observed the following pattern – the whole street is made as a single ensemble. So unusual eyes don't immediately notice, where it ends, say, the Main post office building and begins the building, which houses some ministries. Here is just two subway station – "Kreschatik and Independence Square, Kyiv Passage. During holidays and weekends the street is often blocked, turning into a pedestrian.
