Meknes is one of the Imperial cities of the African country of Morocco. It is located in the North Middle Atlas mountain plateau 60 km from Fes. Very often, this city is known as the Moroccan Versailles or the "city of a hundred minarets".
Meknes has many historical monuments. Like most ancient cities of Morocco, it is divided into two parts - New and Old town (Medina). Even during the reign of the Great Sultan Moulay Ismail, Medina was fenced powerful 10-kilometer stone wall with entrance gate Bab Mansour, which later became the most beautiful gates in the country. The wall was built to protect the city from attacks of the Berbers. In 1996, due to the special combination of European and Islamic traditions in the architecture of the Old part of Morocco Meknes was included in the World heritage list of UNESCO.
Streets of the Medina is very picturesque. Today, the Medina of Meknes is one of the most lively urban locations, it is the area of El Hedim that connects the Imperial part of the old town. On the square in El Hedim are beautiful bazaars that are open to customers from the early morning. On the market there are all sorts of Handicrafts, the work of local artists - a huge number of wonderful carpets, tapestries and quality fabrics. In addition, in the square there is the opportunity to see the amazing performances of acrobats, snake charmers and fire-eaters. Area El Hedim is an unforgettable world of the middle ages.
Not far from here, near the great Mosque, is a real masterpiece of Hispano-Arabic architecture - the building of the madrasa Bou Inania, which have long been not used as a school and is open to visitors. Special attention deserves the Palace of al-Mansur, the bourgeois house of the late XIX century, converted into a covered market.
