Halki Photo: Halki

Halki is a settlement in the Central part of the Greek island of Naxos. The small town is located in the centre of a fertile valley among beautiful olive groves, about 16 km South-East of the homonymous capital of the island and 5 km from the mountain village of Filoti.

Once, being the administrative and financial centre of the island of Naxos Halki flourished and was one of the largest settlements of Naxos. Today in Halki itself only has about 500 residents, most of whom are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Till now it has remained Venetian towers and beautiful Byzantine churches and many beautiful neoclassical buildings testify to the former wealth and power of the city.

Definitely worth a visit located in the heart of Halki old distillery Ballandras, built in 1896. With these times, produced according to ancient recipes of the famous Naxos liqueur "Citron". You can get acquainted with the production and history of the distillery and tastings, and then buy your favorite products.

No less interesting and the snow-white Church of Panayia Proteron with unique frescoes of early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. Within the walls of the Church there is also a small Museum with an excellent collection of various Holy relics. The temple was erected in the first half of the 9th century and is one of the earliest cross-domed churches.

Among the attractions of Halki and its surrounding area it is also worth noting the Byzantine Church of Saint George, built in the 11th century on the ruins of ancient temples, the Church of Panagia Josiane, presumably Dating from the 6th century, and the tower of Gratzia (17th century) – a fine example of Venetian military architecture.
