Queens is the largest borough (district) of new York. If the borough of new York became independent cities, Queens would be the fourth most populous metropolis of the United States (after Los Angeles, Chicago and Brooklyn). But in many neighborhoods, more like the suburbs, this does not say anything.
First it was founded by the Dutch, they were replaced by the British. Heroic in the history of Queens little. Here remember that in 1657 the villagers flushing appealed to the Governor of the colony of New Holland with the petition, which demanded religious freedom. On 37th Avenue is a house-Museum of John bone, who was arrested in 1662 for the fact that he was going home the Quakers (supporters of one of the branches of Protestantism). In the war for independence Queens played a minor role, however, it was here that the British grabbed the scout colonists Nathan Hale (the young man was then hanged in Manhattan).
In 1897, residents of Queens, occupying the Western part of the island of long island, voted for joining them in a single city of new York. In 1909 the shore of Queens and Manhattan joined the Queensboro bridge, in 1915 a large part of the borough was connected to a city-wide metro system. Here in 1939, and opened La Guardia airport, and in 1948, is an international airport in the sixties named after the deceased President John F. Kennedy. It is the largest air gateway of the country, so that low flying aircraft in the sky Queens is the usual case.
Queens is a patchwork of dozens of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and with its own population. Howard beach, Whitestone, and Middle village – the place of residence of the Italians, Ozone Park and South Ozone Park are collected Hispanics, Rockway beach and Woodside – Irish and Filipino. In the Northwest, in the district of Astoria, Greeks live in Ridgewood immigrants from Eastern Europe, in Kew gardens hills Jewish.
In Queens, there were many prominent figures of culture: film Director Francis Ford Coppola, stars of jazz Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, musician Paul Simon. There is a Botanical garden, art Museum, sculpture Park Socrates, the Noguchi Museum (in his collection of sculpture, furniture, decoration, architectural model).
Queens is a very calm and nice area: there are almost no skyscrapers, along quiet green streets – mostly two-storey family houses with gardens and front gardens, squares, sports grounds, churches. At times it seems that you are in a rural area. But this is also new York is a huge, diverse, unique.
