The collection of the Odessa art Museum is one of the most significant and diverse collections of native art in Ukraine. It covers all kinds of art (painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative arts) and includes works of Ukrainian and Russian masters from the iconography of the sixteenth century to the present, averaging more than 10 thousand original works.
The Museum is located in the center of Odessa, in the Palace, is a monument of architecture of the early XIX century and having an artificial underground cave, also open to the public. The Museum is located in 26 halls on two floors. It is built in a historical-chronological order with respect monographic principle of display of works of each author.
The exposition opens wonderful creations painters of the XVI-XVIII centuries and full of character early secular portraits of the XVII century. With the painting of the XVIII - early XIX century introduce the works of the best masters of that era, such as D. Levitsky, V. Borovikovsky, O. Kiprensky, V. Tropinin and others.
The Museum has a large and representative collection of works by artists of the democratic trend in Russian art of the second half of the XIX. This is the work of such famous artists as I. Kramskoy, A. Savrasov, I. Levitan, I. Shishkin, A. Kuindzhi, I. Repin, V. Surikov and many others. Interesting and numerous collection of paintings of the famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky.
One of the best sections of the collection - the art of the turn of XIX and XX centuries - reflects the diversity and tensions of creative searches of this challenging time. V. Serov, N. Wrobel, I. Roerich, Boris Kustodiev, A. Benois, Konstantin Somov, V. Kandinsky, P. Levchenko, A. Murashko. The Department of modern art is the artistic life of Odessa with 20-ies till nowadays.
A large and interesting collection of icons in Odessa art Museum gives you the opportunity to fully explore the unique monuments of Russian and Ukrainian icons of XVI-XIX centuries.
