The rocky mountain Festungsberg in the XI century was built the fortress as a refuge for the Salzburg archbishops. It was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, and its current form of the castle acquired the year 1500. In the nineteenth century it was used as military barracks, then a fortress used as a prison.

This is the largest fully-preserved fortresses in Central Europe. Thick walls surround the Palace of the Archbishop, the Church of St. George, various residential and commercial buildings.

Corner tower of Recturm was once used as a prison. Here is preserved a torture chamber. In the tower Glockenturm through which you can get into the living space of the building, before hanging bells. Survived another two towers – the Hare and Sulfur, which is located on a little square on the ramparts. Everywhere you can see a lot of guns, most often aimed at the city.

In the Palace of particular interest is a Golden room with a graceful Gothic microwave (1501), the majolica and decorated with figures. The exposition of the fortress Museum tells the history of the castle and its owners.
