Chapel in the name of Holy. of St. George, located in the memorial complex on the hill of Sapun mountain, to the South-East of Sevastopol, was built on private donations in honor of the 50th anniversary of victory over fascism.
This place was chosen not by chance: in 1944 it was here that sparked fierce battles, the German troops reinforced steep slopes of the Sapun mountain. The soldiers and sailors had to pass through rows of barbed wire, concrete barriers and a barrage of fire to get to the top of the mountain. After the war in memory of their heroism here was erected the obelisk of Fame and Eternal flame was lit. Nearby, in the open air you can see samples of our and enemy military equipment.
The Church was founded on 19 January 1995, the author of the project was made by architect G. S. Grigoryants. Sanctified abode may 6, 1995, Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine Vladimir.
The chapel of Saint George is a truncated cone, finished with the figure of an angel with a cross. The angel was made according to the drawings of Archpriest N. Donenko. The icon of St. George, located in the temple, wrote the honored artist of Ukraine, Brusentsov. A mosaic version of the icon, which is located above the entrance to the chapel, was designed by artist Vladimir Pavlov.
The chapel of Saint George is a beautiful decoration famous Sapun mountain, which was the main Bastion of defense of the approaches to the city of Sevastopol. Thanks to good design, the Church is perfectly blended into the complex of monuments of Sapun mountain, becoming an aesthetic surrounding the epicenter of the memorial ensemble.
