Monument to Peter the great, located in the historic town of Taganrog on Peter street at the gate of the city garden is one of the attractions of the city. The monument was made by the famous sculptor M. M. Antokolsky. The casting of the monument was made in Paris in the workshops of the brothers Thibault. Delivered he was from Marseille in Taganrog steamer "Despina". The author of the granite pedestal, made in 1901, was made by the owner of the Odessa art workshop, artist Edwardsen Vladimir

Monument to Peter the great was installed at the request of the local community and with funds donated by natives of Taganrog, transferred to A. P. Chekhov when meeting with the sculptor Antokolsky and Bernstam in Paris. In January 1924, instead of the figure of Peter I on a pedestal was a monument to Lenin. And the sculpture of Peter I the Great was installed in the lobby of the library named after A. P.
