The Museum "the Tula necropolis" was opened in 1998, It is the country's first provincial historical-architectural and landscape Museum. The basis of the Museum and attitude to the ancient cemetery as the center of material and spiritual culture was laid by the oldest Tula ethnographer, doctor of theology, Archpriest Rostislav Lozinski. Under his direct leadership in the city at the end of the 1980s it was formed a social movement called "the Tula necropolis", which then gave its name to the Museum. The work of this movement focused on the study and rescue of historic cemeteries.
In the early 1970s, the city authorities decided to connect the street Pervomayskaya and Timiryazev, breaking through the wall of the old all saints cemetery and make this place automotive interchange. With the joint efforts of Lozinsky, journalists of the newspaper "Molodoy Kommunar, Moscow necropolises was established informal public movement "the Tula necropolis". Its members every week staged Saturday to clear away the old tombs of ancient Tula cemeteries. In cleanup was attended by people of different professions and ages.
