The Church of the Vernicle is located in the village of Mlawa, which is 5 km from the road Bologoe-Udomlya. Constantly there are about two dozen people, come for the summer vacationers. And in the middle of the 19th century there were more than two hundred yards. On the river Msta caravans of vessels which carried cargoes to Novgorod. Therefore, the local population was served by this shipping way.

Milevska land has an ancient history – preserved mounds are 6-8 centuries, and a little downstream of the river there is a large bulk settlement. In the year 947 on the way to Novgorod Olga founded on the banks of the Msta several graveyards. Most likely, then there was Mlawa. The exact date of Foundation of Mlawa unknown, but it has been documented that in the mid-12th century it played a big role in trade relations of Novgorod.

According to legend, in the mid-11th century in Mlawa built a wooden chapel on the spot where now stands the Saviour of the St. George temple. Since that time there has always been an active Church, and in the mid 16th century they were even two: the Church of Peter and Paul and Egorievsk Church.

A new Saviour-St. George Church was built thanks to the donations of the merchants, who took caravans with goods on the Msta. Huge sisterella the Church is visible from the river a few kilometers to Mlawa. The construction of the stone Church began in 1823 and was going to 1849.

Currently, the Church is functioning.

Near the walls of St. George's Church in the old cemetery is a large dark mossy stone. He is surrounded by a fence, inside of which there is a metal cross. It's a grave Marfa Posadnitsa. So far historians have not decided: whether this is the same Martha who was the wife of Isaac Boretsky, Novgorod mayor, and Martha Lee actually buried here. The inscription on the slab reads that Martha died in 1492. The slab was found in the early 19th century, when they dug the grave, and accidentally stumbled on an old stove. Under the slab found a brick arch, which did not begin to open. The find was kept secret, a rumor that in Mlawa found an ancient burial ground, quickly spread around, and in Mlawa curious began to flock. Decided that this could be a grave Marfa Posadnitsa.

Martha was a rich and powerful figure in Novgorod in the late 15th century. During the confrontation between Moscow and Novgorod, she rallied around the Novgorod boyars. In 1478, when Novgorod was annexed to Muscovy, Martha was shackled and sent into exile by the Msta. Its further fate is unknown: maybe she was killed near Mlawa, or she died in exile or were imprisoned in Mlavsky monastery.

In the Church books preserved information about the many wonderful cases and the miracles that occurred at the grave of Martha. Recently on the grave of Martha someone from the congregation installed a new fence with a roof, surmounted by a cross.
