Savoy castle, standing at the foot of the hill Rantala in the town of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, in the Italian region of Val d'aosta and also known as the Castle of Queen Margaret, was built between 1899 and 1904 for years. He dominates the whole valley up to the glacier Liskamm. It was in this castle for many years until his death in 1926, the year lived Queen Margaret, widow of Umberto I.
The architect Emilio Stracci, who was the author of the neo-Baroque decor of the Palazzo Reale in Turin and the Quirinale in Rome, designed the castle in medieval style, described as "Lombard style of the 15th century", which was typical of the Savoy dynasty and the French architecture of the period. The castle consisted of a main structure of a rectangular shape with four pointed towers, each one different from the other, and the outside was lined with gray stone from stone quarries of Gressoney, Gaby and Werth. Inside it was divided into three floors – on the first residential rooms on the second apartment of the Royal family, and the third, now closed to the public, was intended for members of the Royal court. Underground there were wine cellars and warehouses. Unfortunately, until now has preserved some fragments of the original situation of the castle, including tapestries of linen and cotton. Also noteworthy ornaments brushes Carlo Massetti, who later worked on the decoration of the Palazzo Reale in Turin, coffered ceilings, imitating medieval, wood panels and furniture Deller. Most of the current furniture was brought from the Villa Margarita, where the Queen lived up to the construction of the castle.
The main entrance is located on the ground floor leads into a spacious hall with columns and painted coffered ceilings, and from there you can get into other rooms. On one side are games rooms and Lounges, United with a semicircular porch facing the valley. On the other hand – a dining room with richly decorated walls, a fireplace and a "parchment" wood panels. The so-called "service entrance" in the octagonal tower in the North-Western wing of the castle is also designed in the Gothic revival style.
An elegant wooden staircase with griffons and eagles leads to the Royal chambers. Bedroom Queen Margherita was the best position – the Windows offer excellent views of Monte Rosa and the entire valley. In the next room lived crown Prince Umberto, and on the opposite side housed the apartments of the Marquise PES di Villamarina, the court ladies-in-waiting of the Queen.
The castle kitchen was in a separate building just to the side and was connected to the main building via an underground narrow-gauge Railways. To other premises belonged Villa Belvedere, where the guests of the castle and the Royal guard, and a small house in which he lived, the Royal poet and singer, Ermitage Carducci. At the foot of the Savoy castle was surrounded by a rock garden with Alpine plants.
