In the South-Western part of Chios island, about 35 km from its eponymous capital, in the famous district of Mastichochoria (sell unique mastic trees) there is a medieval village. It was built in the Byzantine period and is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture perfectly preserved.

The history of the founding of this settlement typical for its time. Constantly looming threat of attack by pirates and other invaders, for whom "mastic edge" was a particularly valuable prize, forced the inhabitants of small settlements to unite and take refuge behind the walls of the Grand fortifications.

The house was built close to each other, forming an impregnable well fortified fortress. The tangled mazes of narrow streets with arched ceilings are very often dead end and created additional difficulties for infiltrated the fortress of enemies. Watch towers were connected by an underground tunnel, through which it was possible to get into the main defensive tower, located on the Central square. Well, fitted under one of the towers, gave local residents a great opportunity to survive in the event of a long siege.

The most famous attraction of the Place is undoubtedly the magnificent Church of Taxiarchis, or Great Taxiarchis, built in the 19th century, the site of the former Central defensive tower (it was demolished specifically for the construction of the temple). It's the biggest Church of the island of Chios and one of the largest churches in Greece. Also definitely worth a visit and the oldest temples of the Place, the Church of Agia Paraskevi and the Old Taxiarchis.

The inhabitants of the Place are proud to preserve and protect their ancient cultural traditions. Today the Place is recognized as an important historical and architectural monument and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the island of Chios.
