The electricity Museum is located on the site of an old power station of Funchal, which in 1989 was decommissioned. The Grand opening of the electricity Museum "Casa da Luz" ("House of light") was held on 24 November 1997, and was timed to the 100th anniversary since the advent of electricity on the island of Madeira. Power station of Funchal was built in 1897 and was the first electric company on the island.
The electricity Museum is considered one of the most interesting museums in Funchal, because among the exhibits visitors can see rare cars and mechanisms, which are more than fifty years, and some over a hundred years. The Museum is divided into four halls, which are called: lights of Funchal, the Age of electricity, Sources of energy, the Madeira and Interactive scientific and technical room. In the first room, talk about the different lighting systems in the city and put on display the samples of the first kerosene lamps that were used before electric lamps. In the second hall tell us about the evolution of electrification in the archipelago and on electricity production. In the third hall the exhibition will tell about energy sources and primary sources (wind and sun), which are used for energy. In scientific and technical room are interactive educational modules, which describes the production, transport and distribution of energy. This room is the most popular in the Museum, as equipped with computers equipped with special software and helmets, allowing you to virtually experience the world of electricity.
