Grand choral synagogue Photo: Grand choral synagogue

Grand choral synagogue of Grodno was rebuilt several times and burned a few times. The current synagogue building built in 1902-105, Ilya Francine.

The first wooden synagogue was built on this site in the sixteenth century. The first stone of the synagogue was built by Rabbi Mordechai Jaffe in 1575-1580. A draft of this magnificent structure was made by the Italian architect Santi Gucci.

In 1617 broke out in a terrible fire, the fire destroyed a priceless work of architecture. Was soon obtained the permission of the Polish king Sigismund II for the construction of a new stone synagogue, which was even better still. May 29, 1885, a fire destroyed almost the entire Jewish quarter. Together with the Jewish houses were burned and a synagogue. Remained more or less unharmed by the fire, only the idolatrous. The synagogue was rebuilt.

Grand choral synagogue was closed after the arrival of Soviet power in 1940. During the great Patriotic war the Nazis used it to gather the Jews of Grodno ghetto before being sent to executions and torture.

In 1991 the building was given to the Jewish community. From that moment began restoration work. Much do the members of the community on their own, but for the restoration of a huge architectural complex, not enough money and manpower. Great contribution to the restoration of the synagogue made the Aussie AVI Salver, whose father once lived in Grodno.

Despite ongoing repairs and material difficulties, the Jewish community gathers in the synagogue. There are prayer services and celebrations. Already in the exposition of the Grodno Jewish Museum.
