The Church of St. Nicholas belongs to the most ancient architectural monuments of Ukraine, and is the oldest monument of monumental architecture in Lviv. The temple could not be better characterizes ancient Russian architecture. The first documentary evidence of it dates back to 1292, which was confirmed by the excavations of 1977. There is a perception that the Church was used Galitskii princes as a family vault. In the late 15th century the Church was exempted from paying taxes, and in the middle of the 16th century the parish granted the rights "of Euridice". This meant that the parish population was subject to the authorities and courts of the Church, not of the castle, as it was before.
In 1544, the year was marked by the Foundation of Nikolaev Church of the Orthodox brotherhood, containing a school and a poorhouse. Fire 1623 caused the Church great harm. In 1772 the Church was again rebuilt, but in 1800 was burning again. Therefore, from the primary building of the 13th century remained only the foundations and the lower half of the walls, due to the fact that they were stacked with hewn limestone blocks.
The basis of the cruciform plan of the Church is square oblong nave with a semicircular apse. The West wing - rectangular porch, and North and South chapels with rounded apses. The dome is complete, decorated with lights, crown the altar and the nave. The simple, clean look of the sanctuary, eloquent pyramidal composition of fragmented volumes allow us to attribute the temple to a number of unique creations of the Galician school of architecture.
To visit the temple today can not only admirers and lovers of medieval architecture, but also all those who seek Union with God. Solemn and filled with a special fragrance, the atmosphere, gives the soul and joy to the body.
