The ancient theatre in Lyon is at the top of the fourvière hill. It is located near the Odeon (as old as the theatre, concert hall), both structures together to create a harmonious architectural ensemble. And the theatre and the Odeon annually be the venue for the concerts and performances held within the framework of the summer festival "Night Forever". The festival takes place in June-July and represents a variety of types of art – from film and circus to classical music and drama productions.
Theatre on the fourvière hill was discovered in the nineteenth century, and since 1933 there began to carry out restoration work. It is known that its construction began under the Emperor Octavian August, about a 15 year BC. Then built arena with a diameter of 90 meters, 25 sectors for the audience, the orchestra, the scene and the two side entrances. For the construction of a stone theatre was brought including the Glanum (now in its place is Saint-rémy-de-Provence). The construction was continued by the Emperor Hadrian in the II century in this period was built on the third floor stairs, the diameter of the structure was increased to 108 meters, and the capacity of the theatre was to be 10 thousand spectators. The audience came to the theater, mainly to see the Comedy show with music. The theatre has excellent acoustic performance: behind the stage was a wall that reflects the sound and sent it into the stands of spectators.
Next to the theater, you can see other attractions of the ancient city of Lugdunum, which stood on the site of modern Lyon. These include the aqueduct which was one of the longest aqueducts in the Roman Empire, the sanctuary of Cybele, as well as Roman tombs and baths. Guests of Lyon to the antiquities on Fourviere hill delivers the funicular.
