The Cathedral and collegiate Church of the virgin Mary, St. Dionysius and St. George in Manchester – this is the full and official name of Manchester Cathedral, an architectural and historical monument. Rebuilt and restored in the Victorian era and after the bombings of WWII, it has retained the beauty and splendor of the perpendicular style of Gothic.

First Church of the virgin Mary was built on this site in 1215, but from the buildings of this time nothing has been preserved. The Cathedral was built in parts, but the main construction of the Cathedral is connected with the name of James Stanley, the Church warden in 1485-1506 G. G., whose kinship with the Tudors provided him with the wealth and ability to hire for the construction of the best masters of the country. It was at this time the nave were rebuilt, ceiling and choirs, and performed amazing carvings that adorn the Cathedral. The nave of Manchester Cathedral is considered to be the widest in England. The roof is supported by carved figures of angels in human growth, playing different musical instruments.

In the mid-nineteenth century in the Cathedral underwent extensive restoration work. In 1940, the Cathedral was badly damaged by bombing, and restoration work took about 20 years. The stained glass Windows were restored only in the 1980-90's.

The Cathedral contains the archives from the year 1421.
