Basilica Of Sant Eustorgio Photo: Basilica Of Sant Eustorgio

Basilica of Sant Eustorgio Church in Milan, located in the city Park Basil. For many years she was an important pilgrimage centre for pilgrims going from Rome to the Holy Land, because it is here, according to tradition, is the tomb of the biblical Three Kings – Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar.

Probably the Basilica was founded in the 4th century. It bears the name of St. Eustorgias – Bishop of Milan, who is credited with the movement in 344, the year of the relics of the Three Kings from Constantinople. In 1764, the year when he demolished the old columns, beneath them Christian burial was found with coins of the reign of Emperor constant, the son of Constantine the Great. Later the Church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. In the 12th century, when Milan was raided by Frederick Barbarossa, the relics of the kings kidnapped and later removed to Cologne. Only in 1903-1904 the bone fragments and pieces of clothing were returned to the Basilica. Today they are kept in the altar of the Three Kings of the same name next to the empty sarcophagus. Also on this day, in memory of the biblical characters, the bell tower of the Church is crowned with a star instead of the traditional cross.

Since the 13th-century Basilica of Sant Eustorgio was the main temple of Milanese Dominican monks who advocated its restoration. The current facade of the building is a reconstruction from the 19th century. Inside, the Church consists of a Central nave and two aisles with groin vaults. From Romanesque Church preserved only part of the apse, and from early Christian buildings – ruins, located underground in the apse. Also inside are the chapels of the Basilica, whose construction began in the 14th century. Special mention deserves the chapel of the 15th century tomb in the Renaissance style and the triptych the Sant'ambrogio Bergognone. In other, more ancient chapels, you can see frescoes by pupils of Giotto and the tombs of the members of the Visconti family. And behind the apse is probably the most outstanding attraction of the Basilica – the Portinari chapel of the 15th century, one of the famous examples of Renaissance art in Lombardy.
