Nagasaki emerged in the late sixteenth century as a small port settlement, then became a city that in the next two and a half centuries was the only port open to international trade. By the end of the XVII century, Nagasaki was one of Japan's largest missionary centers, and currently it is home to the largest Christian community in the country.
About these and other facts from the history of the city can be found by visiting the Museum of history and culture of Nagasaki. It was opened in 2005 in the former residence of the Manager of Nagasaki. This building belongs to the buildings of the medieval period, it suffered a complete renovation. In the Second World war, this building was the headquarters of the air defense of Nagasaki. In the shelter, which was located in the Western part of the building during the atomic bombing tried to hide the townspeople.
The Museum collection has 48 thousand items, among which documents, works of decorative art, as well as items brought to Japan by foreign merchants. The Museum is mostly devoted to the topic of international relations of Japan with other countries in the period of self-isolation, which covered from XVII to XIX century. In particular, the permanent exhibition presents the exhibits brought from Holland, China and Korea. In the Museum you can also get an idea about the so-called culture Nanban or the culture of "southern barbarians" - immigrants from Portugal and Spain. In addition, part of the Museum's collection is devoted to the introduction and spread of Christianity.
The Museum space is divided into three parts, one devoted to the theme of Nagasaki magistrate and contains a reconstruction of the lives of officials of the middle ages. The other two parts devoted to the historical culture and modern life Nagasaki – what is the city in the economy of the country, and occupies a leading position.
