Fortress Badem was built by the Turks, who after the capture of Niksic made the city their defensive lines. Originally, this castle was the predecessor of the city. In 1518 recorded the first mention of the fortress Bedem. To this day the castle was left in ruins in and around modern Niksic.
By the way, the name of the city received during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Before that this place has changed names several times: the Romans built a settlement here with a fortified camp, called Anagasta, and in the middle ages when the region was occupied by the Slavs, the city was named Onehost.
In 1877 the city was liberated from Turkish rule, and then nikšić gradually started to become urbanized area as in need of defensive strengthening is not necessary. Liberated from the Turks, the city began to live a new life, attracting new settlers.
Ruins built by the Turks the fortress Bedem today are protected by the state as a national historical monument. Recently the citadel complex was restored, after which the area has reached several hectares. The fortress is located on a hill top with views of the Nikšićko valley and cliffs.
