One of the striking sights of Poltava is an architectural ensemble of the Round square. This is the only in the CIS composite complete ensemble of the era of provincial classicism and the best ensemble of the classical period in Ukraine. Architectural-historical complex is located in the heart of the city.
The Round square image began to form in the early 19th century the Buildings were made simultaneously and in the same style – classicism, when Poltava was named a provincial city. The formation of the ensemble lasted from 1805 to 1840, the money of the famous philanthropist Seeds Kochubey.
Architect square Michael Amvrosimov suggested Poltava Governor-General A. Kurakin to have an administrative building in a circle on the new square, to the West of the historic center, where according to tradition Poltava after the battle of Poltava was met by Tsar Peter I. the basis for future buildings Amvrosimov took the "model" projects known Petersburg architect Adrian Zakharov.
As a result, the ensemble of the Round square was eight administrative buildings: the house of the Governor-General 1810 (today - regional trade Union Council), the old Governor's house 1810 (now the organized crime control Department in Poltava region), provincial offices 1810 (now Poltava city Council), the house of the Vice-Governor 1811 (now a house), little Russian post office 1869 (today - Minor Academy of arts), the building of the noble Assembly 1810 (now a movie theater. During the great Patriotic war architectural ensemble almost completely destroyed. After the city was liberated from the Nazis to the Poltava architects was drawn up a recovery plan for the ensemble, which was made in the 1950-1960-ies.
