The Franciscan Church is one of the oldest churches in the old part of the Austrian city of Salzburg. The Romanesque portal of the 13th century leads to the Gothic chancel, decorated with statues of Jesus Christ sitting on the throne of St. Peter and St. Rupert, and the ceiling of the room is a majestic starry vault. In the 16th century was built the Baroque portal.

The exact origin of the Church is unclear, however, its construction is connected with the Church of St. Virgil. Like most other churches in Salzburg he has been the victim of fires, but in the end, fell victim to the punishment of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1167. The townspeople helped with reconstruction in the 12th century. For restoration work, was invited by the architect Hans von Burghausen, who gained fame through his Church in Andshut. His masterpiece is the magnificent choral hall, which effectively reflects the fusion of light and darkness. The original altar was built by Michael Pacher in the years 1495-1498, but, unfortunately, has not survived to our days. Fortunately, his Madonna and Child were saved, and later put in a new altar created in 1709-1710, by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Above the altar are gorgeous filigree lattice in the Rococo style, created in 1790 by Thomas Retsina. In the chapel of St. Francis frescoes of the work of Rottmayer on the life of the Holy founder of this monastic order.
