Drama theatre named after A. P. Chekhov in Taganrog is one of the oldest theatres in the South of Russia. Start Taganrog theatre put the troupe of dramatic artists, working under the guidance of a nobleman Petrovsky, since 1827
Special heyday of the Taganrog theatre reached after the erection in 1866, the building is a unique monument of architecture. The author of this project were made by the Italian architect K. Longeron and Russian architect N. Cowards. The building was very well planned: spacious hall with excellent acoustics, fine sculpting, exquisite painting and delicate chandelier. Layout, construction and design of the auditorium is a miniature version of the hall of Milan's La Scala.
In 1920 drama theatre was nationalized and called folk art. In February 1927, the institution celebrated its 100th anniversary. This day was a real celebration for the whole city. In 1944, the theatre received the name of A. P. Chekhov. In the same year the theatre was visited by a group of graduates from the Moscow state Institute of theatrical arts, the course is M. M. Tarkhanov
For the 150th anniversary in 1977, the theater was awarded the order "Badge of Honor". Since 1980, the city began to undergo the traditional International theatre festival "In the homeland of Anton Chekhov A. P.", attended by the best theatre companies not only Russia but also Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Australia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Japan, etc. In 2002 and 2010, the drama successfully participated in International festivals in the town of Badenweiler with performances of "Goblin" and "the Proposal" by Anton Chekhov. In November 2003, the theatre group participated in the first International theatre forum "Golden knight", held in Moscow.
Today the theatre continues to create, carefully preserving the traditions of Russian art. Drama theatre named after A. P. Chekhov repeatedly proved that he is worthy to wear the name of their great countryman.
