The Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Angels is located on the corner of Boulcott and Willis in the capital of New Zealand - Wellington. Church history begins with the year of 1843, when the city began to be held the first Catholic mass on Sundays. Then the decision was made to build a Catholic Church, and after a few months she was ready.

It was built almost on the site of the present Church of St. Mary of the Angels. In the next 30 years, the Church has steadily expanded, and in 1873 it was decided to build a larger building to meet the needs of the growing number of parishioners. A few days after this decision, the newspaper "Wellington Independent" published an article, where the first time mentioned the name of "St. Mary of the Angels".

The new Church building was designed for 450 people and cost £ 1,500. The building was built so that in future it could be expanded, and that was done in 1892. After the reconstruction the capacity of the Church has grown to 550 people.

May 28, 1918, the Church was completely destroyed by fire. The damage was 2 525 pounds. Next after the fire on Sunday convened a meeting, which discussed the issue of restoration of the building. Immediately at this meeting has raised nearly £ 4,000. Until October of that year, funds were raised to restore the Church, and by April of 1919 were collected 27 500 pounds. This money was built the building of the Church of St. Mary of the Angels, which can be seen today. The architect was Frederick Jersey Claire, who earned a reputation for building in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, about one hundred churches, mainly in the southern part of the North Island.

In connection with the outbreak of the First world war, the construction was difficult, however, did not stop, and on March 26, 1922 at 9:30 a.m. Bishop Redwood inaugurated the Church of St. Mary of the Angels.
