Sea Museum in Biarritz Photo: Maritime Museum in Biarritz

Sea Museum in Biarritz is located near the centre of the city. He stands in front of the rocks Madonna. Built in the first half of the twentieth century, the building is easily recognizable by the distinctive characteristics of art Deco – clear and rigorous lines, minimalistic design of the facade, the narrow elongated Windows. At the end of the last century, the Museum building was renovated. The first such exhibition in Biarritz was opened in 1871 on the initiative of the Marquis Leopold de Polen participating in studies of the Bay of Biscay.

The inner space of the Museum is divided into four levels, which are about two and a half dozen aquariums. They contained approximately 150 species of fish and marine animals, which inhabit mainly the Bay of Biscay.

In addition to the living inhabitants of the sea, in the Museum you can also see the skeletons of large marine mammals (whales and dolphins) that were found on the shore. They are represented in the lowest level, there are also exhibitions devoted to the history of whaling and fishing. About these types of classes represented by documents, photographs and films.

On another level there is the "Cave of the sharks", another level is reserved for the seals and sea lion. It also hosts live entertainment with their participation, Museum visitors are allowed to be present when feeding animals. The real "stars" of the Museum are the seals, their performances always collect a lot of viewers, and the audience even known the names of these six pinnipeds artists.

The Museum displays and other inhabitants of the Bay – turtles, mollusks, and crustaceans. A few years ago at the Museum installed new aquariums inhabited by the representatives of the marine fauna of the Caribbean, North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific area.
