The Museum of Brest fortress Photo: the Museum of Brest fortress

The Museum of Brest fortress opened on 8 November 1956. It is located on the Central island of the Citadel in Engineering the barracks — the only surviving part of the North-Eastern perimeter of the Citadel.

The Museum was created as a monument of military glory and a tool of Soviet propaganda. In the USSR a visit to the Museum of Brest Fortress was considered mandatory for official foreign delegations.

Decorated in red and black scheme, highlighted in the stands make a very strong impression on visitors. Here real historical findings during the war coexist with mannequins in uniform, items of a peaceful pre-war life and posters during the war. All the materials are so arranged, that is immersive. It seems that the bombs hanging from the ceiling, falling from the sky on the heads of visitors, and the guitar left on a chair, sounded a minute ago.

June 21, 1961 was the first meeting of defenders of the Brest fortress, dedicated to the 20th anniversary from the day of the attack of the fascist army at Brest fortress. In connection with this event was increased exhibition space in 2, 5 times. She was 1000 square meters.

The exposition of the Museum today is housed in 10 halls. Based on the collection formed more than 50 years, the Museum opened the exhibition of cold and small arms of the XVIII-XX centuries.

For temporary exhibitions halls are used on the first and second floors. There are thematic exhibitions to various memorable dates, and it also hosts exhibitions of weapons.
