Art gallery and Museum Kelvingrove is located in the city of Glasgow, Scotland and is the most visited Museum in Scotland and in the UK outside London.
The building in the Spanish Baroque style was built in 1901 from the traditional architecture of Glasgow red Sandstone. The gallery opening was held in preparation for the International exhibition in Glasgow. The Central place in the main hall is the magnificent organ. There is an urban legend that the building was built backwards, and the architect jumped off one of the towers when I saw that the fronts are reversed. However, this is just a myth.
The basis of the art collection of the Kelvingrove consisted of the collection of paintings donated to the Museum from McLellan galleries, named after the founder and patron of Archibald McLellan. The Museum displays paintings by famous European masters: Rembrandt, Rubens, Botticelli, Titian, Picasso, Dali. Also here a large collection of works by Scottish painters.
In addition to paintings, the Museum displays the collection of weapons and armour, and art of ancient Egypt, collections in natural history (including the skeletons of prehistoric animals) and even a real airplane "Spitfire" - British fighter of the Second world war.
In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II opened the gallery after the reconstruction, which lasted three years. The Museum has many interactive exhibits designed for children.
