The Cathedral is the main Church of the diocese of Mikkeli South Savo). The building is of red brick with slate roof designed by the distinguished Finnish architect Josef Stenbäck and designed in the Gothic revival style in 1896-gg. The Cathedral can accommodate within its walls to 1200 parishioners.

In the Eastern part of the Cathedral is the great altar, painted in 1899. renowned artist Pekka Halonen. The altar painting depicting the scene of Christ's crucifixion, was presented to the city as a gift.
