Beautiful ensemble of temple buildings, located a hundred kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod, located on the banks of the Volga river, in the village makarievo. Rectangular fenced walls with round towers at the corners and gates in the middle of each wall, belongs to Zhovti Vody Makaryev monastery.

The monastery was founded by monk Makarii (later canonized) in 1435. After the invasion of the Tatars from the monastery is almost nothing left and Macarius had to go to another place. Two centuries later, the monastery was rebuilt and named in honor of the founder – Macarius. Previously, the monastery was between Yellow lake and the river, but in the nineteenth century due to the confluence of the lake with the river and the water came close to the walls of the monastery, leaving the memory of the lake is only the second title of Zhovti Vody. Under the decree of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, 1641 in makarievo (a settlement was formed near the monastery) was established by the fair, the proceeds of which went to the improvement of the monastery. The rapid growth of the fair has contributed to the construction of the most beautiful temples of the monastery and the transformation of the village to the district town (1779).

Nowadays, the monastery is a unique architectural ensemble, the main buildings of which date back to the seventeenth century. Business card of the monastery is renovated South gate, the main treasure is the Trinity Cathedral with amazing ancient frescos. The entrance to the monastery is under the gate Church of Archangel Michael. Behind high walls of the monastery lies the founder of a monastery in the ancient rotunda, next to the assumption Cathedral and bell tower.

Makaryev monastery of Zhovti Vody is one of the oldest architectural complexes of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
