The Church Notre-Dame-de-Clignancourt Photo: Church Notre-Dame-de-Clignancourt

The Church Notre-Dame-de-Clignancourt is named in memory of the Clignancourt village lying on the Northern outskirts of Paris near Montmartre. Since the XVI century there was a small chapel of the Holy Trinity, but in 1858 the municipality allowed the construction of a new Church a few steps from the old chapel.

The architect Paul-eugène Lech designed the building in the Romanesque style with a length of 99 meters, can accommodate up to two thousand worshipers. The first stone was laid in 1859, the prefect of Paris, Baron Haussmann. Part of the funds allocated for the construction of personally by the Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie gave the Church furniture and religious supplies. The Church was consecrated in 1863. Eight years later, the Communards, the Church was ransacked, the furniture is gone.

Despite this, the interior of Notre-Dame-de-Clignancourt is one of the most remarkable in Paris. The Church is decorated with splendid paintings, stained glass Windows, sculptures. To look more closely.

Very good sculpture clinic: "King David with lyre" work Louis Schroeder and "Moses with the tablets" Alfred Adolf Leper. It also has a lot of paintings, two of them, "the Nativity of the blessed virgin and the blessed virgin in the temple," brush the Nely Jacquemart, cofounder of the Museum Jacquemart-andré. In the choir attract the attention of two of the canvas of the Novel the goat: "Matthew" and "John the Apostle". The same master painted the main arch, which depicts the heavenly Father surrounded by angels and the prophets, however, to consider the quite difficult vaults, light in the Church a little bit.

But I see the paintings, located in the chapels. The sacred Heart chapel in the transept is decorated with four paintings by Michel Dumas – they narrate the life and martyrdom of the first Bishop St. Dionysius of Paris. In particular, one of the paintings unusually emotionally depicts the time of execution of the Bishop of the Gentiles – Saint Dionysios beheaded.

The shrill note of the martyrdom of incessant ringing in the silence of that dimly lit Church. In the corner chapel of white marble Pieta literally glows on the background of three unusual paintings. On the right struck the soldier with the flag in his hands – fading eyes he sees in the heavens calling him a Saint Joan of Arc. On the left in front of a plain wooden cross kneels, his widow, hugging the little boy. In the center is already three empty crosses of Calvary – the victim was held.

The chapel is dedicated to the memory of the hundreds of parishioners who gave their lives in the First world, – their names are inscribed here on the marble slabs. Between the plates is the picture which emerges from the tomb of the risen Christ: the sacrifice took place, death is defeated.
