Cathedral of the blessed virgin Mary – the world's northernmost Catholic Cathedral built in the Gothic revival style and includes approximately 500 members of different nationalities, most of them Norwegians, poles and Filipinos.

Originally the Cathedral was built as the private residence of the Bishop. In 1860, the building was transferred to the Catholic Church, and a year later the Cathedral was consecrated. The Cathedral is located near the town square tromsø, in the heart of the city.

During its existence, the Cathedral has been through a lot. During the Second world war, this was a camp for refugees, in 1969 the Church was badly damaged by fire, but pretty soon it was restored. Cathedral of the blessed virgin Mary also served as a Catholic school, and in 1989 it was visited by Pope John Paul II.
