The University Museum of tromsø includes the Museum of the city of tromsø, the Polar Museum and the Arctic-Alpine Botanic garden. The exposition acquaints visitors with nature in Northern Norway, culture of the Sami people, archeology and Geology of the region, religious art and tells the amazing phenomenon – the Northern lights.
In the Museum of the city of Tromso, you will be able to learn more about the culture and lifestyle of the Sami people, also to visit the exhibition of jewelry that belonged once to the Vikings, to see a huge dinosaur. The building's design consists of geometric shapes: square tower with pyramidal roof, rotunda with a conical roof, entrance with two rectangular porches, large spaces between the Windows – all this gives the Museum a monumental appearance.
The polar Museum tells about polar explorers and researchers of the Arctic, about hunting seals, whales, polar bears and about the Russian winter. The Museum was opened in 1978 to the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the last expedition of Roald Amundsen in search of a missing Umberto Nobile and the airship “Italia”.
The Arctic-Alpine Botanical garden – the world's northernmost Botanic garden, opened in 1994. It also has a huge number of Alpine plants, affecting its beauty and diversity. Around the garden there is a trail called the “Route of the geologist and leading to the pedestrian bridge, with views of the Botanical garden located on the hillside. Plants are grouped by climate zones continents. The garden is open to the public all year round, admission is free.
