The Varna Museum of theatre puppets is a unique Museum of the similar plan in the Balkans, and one of the smallest museums in Europe. It was opened in 1985 on the initiative of the playwright Barneva.
The exhibition includes more than 120 theatre puppets and elements of scenery of the most successful representations of the past in a puppet theatre of Varna in the period from 1952 to 1995. Here you can see the numerous international awards theatre. The exhibition reflects the stages not only the development of scenography in Bulgaria, but also improvement in the design of theatre puppets.
Along with the traditional dolls, the Museum presents puppets, dolls, masks, parsley and old "harpsichord" dolls. A complex and unique mechanism of these dolls was invented over 50 years ago by George Sarafanov – founder of the Varna puppet theatre. They resemble puppets, but due to the special method of attachment, are set in motion by pressing the keys.
Among others, in the Museum you can see the dolls that were involved in the children's performances such as "Pinocchio" and "Sleeping beauty" and in the play based on the Bible stories. Some dolls have participated in productions for Teens (for example, in the play of Baron Munchausen). There are dolls that are "played" and in performances for adults: "love, Love", "the Queen of spades", "Birds".
Some of the exhibits of dolls took part in the XII International festival of puppet theatres in Tolosa (Spain) in 1994.
