La Kasbah des Oudayas is the main fortress of Rabat. It is located on the Atlantic ocean and is a city within a city. The fortress was named after the tribe of Oudayas, lived in these places even before the Arabs.
Although the building was founded in 1158, its special meaning it has gained only half a century later. It was then grasped in their hands the power of the Almohads led by Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour took control of the whole valley BU-Regragui and took the citadel. The Almohad built in the Kasbah des Oudayas gate, which can be seen today preserved images of animals.
With the departure of Almohad La Kasbah des Oudayas went into decline, and it lasted for several centuries. All this time it was under the robbers, including the pirates, who a long time used the fortress as protection from the fleet of European States. In the end of XVI century fortress, Kasbah des Oudayas was again rebuilt by alawites. Their old cannons can still be seen.
Castle gate is a work of art nevertheless. And behind them is a Paradise: a wide variety of greens, orange gardens, narrow streets with houses built of white limestone. The main street called Djemaa leads directly to the mosque, built in the XII century the Most favorite place of residents and guests of the city is a wonderful viewing platform with a magnificent view of the sea.
Walking through the fortress, be sure to visit the Museum of Moroccan arts with a rich collection of Oriental treasures. In the citadel, is a cozy cafe where you can relax and have a snack.
