One of the main attractions of the Greek island of Hydra, who played a major role in the liberation war for the independence of the Greek people from the Ottoman Empire, of course, is the historical archives Museum of Hydra. This Museum is considered one of the best museums in the country and perfectly illustrates the history of the Greek revolution and the formation of the modern Greek state, as well as the history, traditions and culture of the island, starting at the beginning of the 18th century to the present day.
The Museum was founded in 1918 and located in an elegant mansion that belonged to the native of the island, the shipowner and philanthropist Gikas Coloroso. The basis of the Museum's collection was unique Municipal archive of Hydra (1708-1865) discovered acting mayor Antonios D. Ligesom in the Church of the assumption. In 1952, the Museum building was officially donated to the state and since then it is the responsibility of the Ministry of education and monitored by the National archives of Greece. In 1972, the old building was demolished and built a new. In 1996 a new historical archives Museum of Hydra opened its doors to the public.
In the Museum you can see the unique relics related to the Greek revolution, the Balkan wars, the First and Second world wars, as well as exhibits of pre-revolutionary period – the weapons, navigation equipment, excellent collection of navigational charts (including Large Map of Rigas of Vereesa), model ships, the traditional clothing of the inhabitants of Hydra, prints and more. A special place in the exposition of the Museum is the silver LCIF, which houses the embalmed heart of Admiral Miaoulis. Deserves special attention and superior art gallery presents portraits of eminent historical figures (Andreas Miaoulis, Emmanuel Tombazis, etc.) and paintings of the ships (mostly watercolors).
A unique archive, which features a Museum, is of immense historical value and contains a huge variety of documents (primary documents, manuscripts, codes, lists, etc.) from public and private archives, in detail telling about the island of Hydra, its history, traditions and culture of its inhabitants. There in the Museum and an excellent library with more than 6000 volumes, a large portion of them old and rare editions, Dating from the early 18th century.
The Museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures and seminars, educational programs and cultural events.
