The Bendery fortress – a monument of architecture of the XVI century, the walls of which have been preserved in its original form, one of the main attractions of the town.

The fortress was erected on the right Bank of the Dniester river, by order of the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the submission of which in those days was the Moldavian Principality. Made by architect famous architect Sinan Ibn Abdullian-yeah.

The Bendery fortress built by the canons of Western FORTS Bastion type, during the following centuries it was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt. In the SEVENTEENTH century, the fortress consisted of a citadel, built in the shape of an irregular polygon. At the corners was built eight towers, three of which have a round shape, four – square and one tower is multi-faceted. Under each tower there was a deep cellars where the stored gunpowder, weapons and provisions for the soldiers. The height of the walls, which were connected towers, reached three meters. In one of the towers housed the mosque of prophet Suleiman.

The most ambitious was the upper part of the fortress, which consisted of ten bastions connected by walls, above which rose an earthwork. The height of the walls ran up to about five meters, and the thickness – six. Around the fortress was dug a wide moat, which was filled with water.

The lower part of the fortress consisted of six towers and was intended primarily for the accommodation of the Janissaries, gunsmiths and artisans serving the army.

Over its history, the fortress was repeatedly subjected to attacks and sieges, but for a long time remained in the possession of the Turks. For the first time Russian troops took Benderovsky fortress in 1770, during the Russo-Turkish war. During the battle fortress has undergone considerable damage. It is noteworthy that during the signing of the peace Treaty between Russia and Turkey, the right Bank of the Dniester river with the city of Bender remained in the possession of the Turks. In 1812 Benderovsky the fortress was handed over to the Russian Empire, has undergone reconstruction.

Today the fortress is a place of deployment of the army TMR.
